EU Warns of Downward Spiral in US-EU Relations After Trump Tariff Threats Over Greenland
The European Union warns of a dangerous downward spiral in transatlantic relations after Donald Trump threatens new tariffs on EU nations over Greenland, raising fears of a fresh trade conflict.
The European Union has issued a strong warning after former U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose new tariffs on European countries opposing his renewed push for U.S. control over Greenland. EU officials cautioned that such actions could trigger a “dangerous downward spiral” in relations between Washington and its closest allies.
The warning came after Trump announced plans to introduce punitive tariffs on several EU member states, including Denmark, if they resist U.S. ambitions regarding Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory of major strategic and economic importance. The proposed measures reportedly include a 10% tariff initially, with the possibility of further increases if European governments fail to comply.
European Commission leaders stressed that using trade policy as a political weapon undermines trust and risks escalating tensions at a time when close cooperation is needed on global security, economic stability, and support for Ukraine. EU foreign policy officials emphasized that tariffs would harm businesses and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic while weakening long-standing partnerships.
France and Germany were among the most vocal critics, rejecting what they described as intimidation tactics and reaffirming that Greenland’s status is not open to negotiation. Denmark also reiterated that Greenland’s future lies solely in the hands of its people, not foreign pressure.
Analysts warn that if carried out, the tariff threats could spark a broader trade dispute reminiscent of earlier U.S.–EU trade conflicts, damaging global markets and slowing economic growth. The situation highlights growing uncertainty in transatlantic relations amid rising geopolitical competition in the Arctic region, where Greenland plays a key strategic role due to its natural resources and military significance.
