The Voice of the Wild: Meet Ananya Vishwesh, India’s 14-Year-Old Wildlife Crusader

New Delhi: 02 September 2025| At an age when most teenagers are just beginning to explore their identities, 14-year-old Ananya Vishwesh has already carved her name into the conservation history of India. She’s not just a wildlife enthusiast—she is a conservationist, a naturalist, a birdwatcher, a herpetologist in training, a motivational speaker, a wildlife photographer, and a published author.

But beyond the titles and accolades lies a girl whose heart beats for the forest, whose voice speaks for the voiceless, and whose mission is to protect what remains of the natural world for generations to come.

A Young Girl with an Unyielding Passion

Hailing from the serene Nilgiris, a biodiversity hotspot in Tamil Nadu, Ananya’s journey into wildlife conservation began early—far earlier than most. At an age when the jungle is more a concept in storybooks than a place to defend, Ananya was already identifying birds, studying reptiles, and engaging with forest officials.

What makes her stand out is not just her knowledge, but her ability to inspire. Ananya has delivered motivational talks on wildlife conservation to over 9,000 students across India, communicating in six different languagesEnglish, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi, and even French. Her sessions don’t just educatethey ignite a spark, planting the seeds of environmental consciousness in young minds.

Recognized by the Nation and Beyond

Ananya’s contribution to wildlife and environmental awareness has not gone unnoticed. Her work has earned her felicitations from the Nilgiris District Library, the Tamil Nadu Government, the Rotary Club of Ooty, and the Abdul Kalam Memorial Trust, among others. She was even invited to present her book to the Honorable President of India, a moment of national pride not just for her but for every young conservationist she represents.

She’s been recognized in the Top 100 Influential Indians 2023 by HypeEdge Media, and her name features in the Influencer Book of World Records 2023 and Indian Star Book of Records, both endorsed by the Government of India.

Adding to the list, she was awarded the International Excellence Award 2023 by Excellar Books under the “Children Author Under 12” category, a testament to her storytelling as much as her scientific commitment.

On the Field: Where the Wild Meets Wisdom

While some speak of forests from air-conditioned stages, Ananya walks the talkquite literally. She has actively participated in animal censuses, bird surveys, and snake rescue missions with the Kerala Forest Department. Her presence has been felt from the Agumbe Rainforest in Karnataka, known for its king cobra population, to clean-up drives in Nelliyampathi and plantation drives on World Environment Day in Kerala.

She has conducted wildlife awareness programs across schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, reaching thousands. Her sessions often integrate local culture and biodiversity, making them deeply impactful and memorable.

Her passion for reptiles, often feared and misunderstood, led her into herpetology research and specialized training. As a reptile trainee, she’s breaking stereotypes and encouraging empathy and respect for all creatures, scaly or feathered.

Honored, Yet Humble

From being titled “Singa Penne” (Lion-hearted Girl) to being felicitated by Kerala’s Forest Minister A. K. Saseendran, Ananya’s list of honors reads like that of a seasoned conservationist. She was also the youngest speaker at an International Wildlife Conference, proving that age is not a barrier when the voice carries the weight of purpose.

Her work has earned her the SHE Tamil Nakshatram Young Achiever Award 2024-2025, and she has been a chief guest at several state events, including International Yoga Day and Vanamahotsavam 2025.

A Vision Beyond the Awards

Despite her growing fame, Ananya remains grounded. “I don’t do this for awards,” she said in a recent session. “I do it because the forests need us. And because we need the forests more than we realize.”

Her message is clear: conservation isn't a choice anymoreit’s a necessity. And she believes that it begins with the youth.

In a time when screens often dominate childhood, Ananya Vishwesh reminds us of the unmatched beauty of butterflies, the quiet wisdom of owls, and the importance of every leaf, feather, and scale in our ecosystem.

She is not just a name on an award list. She is the voice of the wildclear, fierce, and full of hope.

Final Thought

India has always revered nature. In Ananya Vishwesh, we see that ancient love for the Earth reborn in the spirit of a young girl with binoculars around her neck, a notebook in her hand, and the future of our forests in her heart.
