Students, Youth Should Contribute to Nation’s All-round Development: ABVP Urges on 79th Independence Day

Palamuru, Telangana – August 16, 2025:
Marking the 79th Independence Day of India, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Palamuru City Unit held a solemn flag-hoisting ceremony at the historic Netaji Chowrasta. The event, organized to honour the memory of the nation’s freedom fighters and instill a sense of patriotic responsibility among students and youth, was attended by local dignitaries, student activists, and community members.

The chief guest of the event was Swamy Potharaju, Telangana State Incharge of Students for Development (SFD), a pan-India academic and social initiative affiliated with ABVP. Addressing the gathering, Potharaju emphasized that the hard-won freedom of India came at the cost of innumerable sacrifices made by generations of freedom fighters. “Our independence is not merely a historical event but a living legacy that demands responsible citizenship and proactive youth participation,” he said.

*Youth as Architects of National Growth*
In a powerful address, Potharaju called upon the student community to play an active role in shaping India’s future. “This is the time for the youth to come forward, not just to celebrate our freedom but to build upon it. India needs young minds to lead in innovation, education, entrepreneurship, and social transformation,” he noted.

Citing the vision of national stalwarts and the ideals of Swami Vivekananda, he urged students to internalize the spirit of “This Country is Mine” as a moral compass for their actions. He further appealed to students to commit themselves to national development initiatives and uphold core values like discipline, unity, and service.

*Call for a Drug-Free and Green India*
Potharaju highlighted the pressing need for youth participation in social reforms, particularly in combating substance abuse. Supporting the national campaign for Nasha Mukt Bharat (Drug-Free India), he stressed the dangers of drug addiction among the youth and its detrimental impact on society and national productivity.

He also underlined the importance of environmental stewardship. “Protecting our environment is not an optional act of charity. It is a duty towards future generations,” he stated, calling for student-led ecological initiatives such as tree plantation drives, waste management awareness, and sustainable living practices.

*ABVP’s Legacy and Vision*
Founded in 1949, the ABVP is one of India's oldest and largest student organizations. It has consistently played a key role in student activism, academic reforms, and community development across the country. Through its affiliate SFD, the organisation also promotes value-based education and nation-centric development models.

On Independence Day, ABVP reasserted its commitment to fostering a generation of responsible, empowered, and socially conscious youth. The event concluded with a cultural performance by local students and the distribution of sweets, symbolizing unity and shared purpose.

As India strides into its 79th year of freedom, voices like these serve as a poignant reminder that while the struggle for political independence has been won, the struggle for economic, social, and environmental equity continues—and it is the youth who must now carry that torch forward.
