Former MP Prajwal Revanna Sentenced to Life in Rape Case: A Landmark Verdict Against Political Power Abuse
Bengaluru, August 2, 2025| In a case that has shaken the foundations of Karnataka’s political elite, former JD(S) Member of Parliament Prajwal Revanna was on Saturday sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a domestic worker—marking one of the most significant convictions of a sitting or former MP for sexual violence in Indian history.
The verdict, delivered by Special Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat at the Bengaluru Special Court for cases involving legislators, concluded months of intense legal proceedings. Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, was also ordered to pay a fine of ₹11.60 lakh, with the majority earmarked as compensation for the survivor.
A Case That Exposed the Depths of Privilege and Exploitation
The case centers on a 47-year-old domestic worker, who had been employed both at the Revanna family’s farmhouse in Hassan and at Prajwal’s Bengaluru residence. The survivor, who had been in the Revanna household’s service for over two decades, testified that she was repeatedly raped between 2020 and 2021, her ordeal secretly recorded by the accused.
The SIT-led investigation unearthed graphic video footage and metadata recovered from Revanna’s personal devices—leaving no room for doubt about the events. A team of forensic experts matched his voice, physical attributes, and the surroundings of the crime scene. The DNA evidence retrieved from clothing samples sealed the prosecution’s case.
"This is not just a case about rape. This is about the systematic abuse of power, trust, and status,” said Ashok Nayak, Special Public Prosecutor, speaking to this correspondent after the verdict. “The survivor showed courage in the face of trauma, intimidation, and public scrutiny. The judiciary stood by her.”
The Trial: Fast-Tracked, But Not Rushed
Despite attempts by defense lawyers to delay proceedings, the Special Court prioritized the matter after a 1,600+ page chargesheet was filed in September 2024. More than 113 witnesses were examined, including law enforcement officers, medical experts, digital forensics professionals, and associates of the accused.
The defense argued that the evidence was politically manipulated—a common refrain in high-profile cases. However, the judge rejected the theory outright, citing the forensic trail and survivor’s consistent testimony as “credible, corroborated, and legally binding.”
Notably, Revanna broke down in court during sentencing. Sources inside the courtroom described a visibly shaken man who sobbed and pleaded for leniency. But Judge Bhat was unflinching: “The crime was not only inhuman but aggravated by the misuse of authority and trust. The accused shall serve imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life.”
Political Ripples and Silence from Gowda Family
Once hailed as a rising star of the JD(S), Revanna was expelled from the party in May 2024 after the scandal broke wide. While the Gowda family has largely remained silent publicly, insiders confirm deep embarrassment within the former Prime Minister’s camp.
“It is a personal tragedy, but the law must take its course,” a senior JD(S) leader told this correspondent on condition of anonymity. “There will be no interference.”
The party, already struggling to retain relevance in Karnataka’s fast-polarizing political arena, has suffered a credibility crisis as a result.
Victim’s Family: ‘Justice Has Spoken’
Outside the court, the survivor’s family expressed cautious relief. “We did not think justice was possible,” her brother said, holding back tears. “She was terrified every day. We thank the judge and SIT for not letting this get buried.”
Women’s rights groups hailed the conviction as a watershed moment, not just for Karnataka but for the country. “This shows that even the most powerful are not above the law,” said Meena Krishnamurthy, head of a Bengaluru-based legal aid NGO.
What Comes Next?
Though Revanna’s legal team is expected to file an appeal before the Karnataka High Court, legal experts say overturning a conviction supported by such extensive digital and forensic evidence will be extremely difficult.
The case, in many ways, represents a new chapter in the intersection of politics, power, and accountability in India. It shows that, when the judicial system is insulated from political interference, truth can prevail.
As Revanna now begins his life sentence at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, his fall from grace will be remembered not just as a personal tragedy, but as a cautionary tale for those who mistake public office as a shield against consequences.
